Mutoti was assaulted by two disgruntled workers last Thursday over outstanding salaries and wages.
The culprits were part of dozens of council employees who gathered at the municipal offices, baying for the mayor’s blood.
Marvellous Khumalo, Chitrest board chairperson, described the attack as unorthodox way of settling issues.
“We urge the council workers to address misunderstandings through their workers’ unions and other constitutional means,” said Khumalo.
He noted that although the workers had valid reasons to protest given that they went for 13 months without being paid, violence was counterproductive to crisis resolution.
Chitrest has called on government and the local authority to see to it that the salary issue is addressed as a matter of urgency, to avoid potential havoc at the council.
