According to Daniel Macuacua, head of the public relations department of the Sofala Provincial Police Command, cited in Saturday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, nobody was killed in either attack, but there was severe damage to some of the vehicles.
Macuacua said that the first attack occurred at about 10.45 in the area of Zove, shortly after the convoy had left Muxungue heading southward. This area has been a favourite spot for Renamo ambushes. Serious damage was done to a Scania truck owned by a Nigerian citizen.
The second attack took place in the Rutanda area at about 17.30, against the return convoy from the Save to Muxungue. The gunmen fired on the buses in the convoy but did not manage to kill any of the passengers.
Macucua said that from Monday to Thursday, Renamo had stepped up its attacks and had injured 11 people in the ambushes, some of them seriously. He did not mention any deaths.
“Once again we condemn the attacks against civilians and the provocations by Renamo against the defence and security forces”, he declared.
Macuacua said the government forces had shown “maximum restraint” in order to avoid further instability. Nonetheless, he insisted that the police would continue to track down the criminals so that they could be held responsible for their acts.
