PSL roundup with Brenna Matendere

The Battle for Zimbabwe Part 1 roars into life this weekend, when champions Dynamos clash with perennial rivals Highlanders in the capital.

Both teams are serious title contenders, just as they have always been. The result of their weekend encounter is likely to give an indication of which team will most likely win it this time round.

Their second meeting will be on match day 24 – eight games before the curtain comes down on the season. Though Dynamos have won the last three league championships under Calisto Pasuwa – who is still in charge, Bosso have arguably been the better team in terms of pitch performance this season.

The Innocent Mapuranga-captained side is just a single point away from log leaders Hwange. On their last weekend mission, they walked out of Gibbo Stadium with one point after a 1-all draw with Triangle, while the Glamour Boys fell to Hwange on a 0-1 defeat on the same day.

More interestingly, the match will be the first each team will play without players who signed for South African sides.

Highlanders will miss the trio of attacking midfielders – Kuda Mahachi, Milton Ncube and Peter “Rio” Moyo, while Dembare will be without their steady goal minder George “Bhora Muhomwe” Chigova, who is likely to be replaced by former Monomotapa man, Artwell Mukandi.

A win for Bosso would see them open a six-point gap over the reigning champions, who usually save their best for the final lap. On the other hand, victory for Dembare would enable them to overcome the three-point deficit and therefore add to their chances of reclaiming the championship.

Log leaders Hwange face Chicken Inn at home in need of maximum points to stay on top, but given the current form of the fast-foods side, who beat Chiredzi 1-0 last week, that feat will be difficult for coach Nation Dube’s side.

Elsewhere, Shabanie Mine will seek redemption after a 0-3 defeat away to Caps United when they clash with energy side ZPC Kariba in Zvishavane.

Chapungu will also seek to maintain their unbeaten run at home when they host Harare City, 4-1 winners over Bantu Rovers on Monday. How Mine face FC Platinum, while Bantu Rovers and Buffaloes have a date at Luveve Stadium. Black Rhinos date Triangle at Rimuka Stadium in Kadoma.

With Zimbabwe already out of the international football scene, all matches will now be during weekends.
