Clinic set up to treat World Cup fever

A World Cup Clinic for ailing soccer fans has been set up in China.

Chinese medics have come up with a new term for a new ailment striking people across the country – World Cup Syndrome.

It is a combination of listlessness, tiredness and insomnia induced by the strange times that football mad fans have to endure to watch games broadcast live from Brazil.

In Chengdu city in southwest China's Sichuan province the first clinic to treat sufferers has been opened and is indeed called the World Cup Syndrome Clinic. It was opened in Chengdu No. 3 People's Hospital in Chengdu last week.

According to the hospital the time difference between China and Brazil is afflicting people in their thousands. As well as sleep disorders they are suffering stomach cramps, loss of appetite, anxiousness and paranoia, with weakened immune systems only one side effect.

Doctors are now on standby 24 hours every day during the World Cup. They also treat psychological issues related to hysteria created by the games.

Wang Fu Wong, 35, a local car parts warehouse supervisor, checked himself into the clinic this week. He said: "I was gutted when Suarez bit the Italian guy and I just kind of cracked up.

"I couldn't eat, I couldn't concentrate, I felt that my world was falling in and, basically, it was only a game of football. I spent 48 hours of complete bed rest at the clinic and now I feel OK. I have rationed myself to one match every two days now."

A doctor at the clinic said: "This is new territory for us, but there is no getting away from the fact that people have been making themselves ill through football."

Armless driver's car confiscated

An armless man has had his car confiscated to stop him driving. Police in China said Wo Guo, 45, was a danger to himself and other road users.

He was pulled over in a routine traffic check in Xiantao city, where officers found he did not have a licence.

He used his left foot to control the steering wheel and the right foot to control the pedals.

According to the armless motorist he has clocked up 100,000 miles without an accident.

Guo lost his arms at the age of seven when he touched high voltage wires with a scythe.

After his arms were amputated he learned to wash his face and brush his teeth, write and to sew using his feet. He is married, has a son who is at college, makes a living selling fruit and says he has a "happy life."

But he says he needs his car to make deliveries: "I don't find driving automatic cars hard. My friend taught me to drive within a week, but I can't get a licence because of my disability so I do it in secret."

A police spokesman said that he would not be fined and he would get his car back if he hired a driver, adding: "He is admirable, but it's too dangerous for him to drive. I hope he can give up driving himself and employ someone else."

Super fans enjoy Game of Thrones wedding

A couple have enjoyed a luxury Game Of Thrones-themed wedding after winning a competition – and nobody died!

Super fans Kerry Ford, 33, and Darren Prew, 37, transformed into Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow for their big day, which was also attended by wolves, white walkers and wildings.

The couple won the ceremony at Eastnor Castle, near Ledbury, as part of a competition held by streaming service blinkbox Movies.

And the win came as a complete surprise to Kerry who didn't even know that plasterer Darren had entered the contest.

Initially, she had pointed it out to him after spotting an ad on Facebook – wondering "who on earth would do that" – and he went on to apply in secret.

On their big day, Kerry and Darren's family and friends were turned into characters from the hit TV series by a group of 50 make-up artists.

This saw best woman Carey McKeown become a bow carrying wilding, best man Mike McKeown turn into a terrifying white walker and the couple's four children, aged between nine and 15, became part of the Stark clan.

Meanwhile, the pair sliced their five-tier wedding cake, which was created by professional cake designer Kerry herself – using a 4ft broadsword.
