Bigger purse for Liverpool

Early this week, Liverpool looked set to release their most-prized asset, Luis Suarez, to Spanish giants Barcelona for a reported €95 million.

This was quite a blow to their second successive quest for their first Barclays Premier League crown in decades and a return to continental glory, but one they could happily take, as it was set to boost Brendan Rogers’ purse in pursuit of new talent.

The Suarez deal, if successful, would leave The Reds with an excess amount of money to spend in the transfer window. The Merseysiders have already signed three players – Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Rickie Lambert. Two more signings, Divock Origi and Lazar Markovic, were expected to arrive at Anfield and provide Liverpool with a replacement for the troubled Suarez, whom the league runners-up were already set to miss for the first four months of the league and European campaign.

Origi is only 19, while Markovic is 20 and together, they can provide Liverpool with many years of service. Their reported deals would range from £10 million for Origi to £25 million for Markovic – fairly priced as Liverpool will have plenty of room to sign even more targets as the transfer window progresses.

So far, the former European champions have been economical. Between Can, Lallana and Lambert, Liverpool had only spent £39 million. That is roughly £13 million per player, but Rodgers would have to offload some of his own players to accommodate the new signings, like Iago Aspas and Lucas Leiva – either permanently or on loan.

The signing of Lallana, Can, Lambert and potential signings of Origi and Markovic will bolster the midfield and back up Steven Gerrard as he continues to age, but other core players at Liverpool are still fairly young enough to provide service at Anfield for many years to come. Liverpool will look to contend once again for a championship as they failed to do so in last season’s campaign by coming up short to Manchester City.
