Biti fears Mugabe dynasty

MDC Renewal Team leader Tendai Biti has attacked President Robert Mugabe for sanctioning the entry of his wife, Grace, to head the Zanu (PF) Women’s League.

The Zanu (PF) women’s league last Friday said it was endorsing Grace to succeed Oppah Muchinguri as secretary-general. Biti told The Zimbabwean in Mutare over the weekend that Grace’s elevation would not be good for the country as it promoted a culture of political dynasty.

“This clearly shows that Mugabe is personalising Zimbabwe. He wants to create a dynasty for himself. As a party we will fight this Mugabe dynasty in 2018. Zimbabwe has a lot of people and it cannot be Gushungo always,” said Biti.

During her belated 49th birthday celebrations at Gushungo Empire in Mazowe, Senate president Edna Madzongwe was the first to endorse Grace before incumbent Oppah Muchinguri weighed in to support the position taken by the women in Zanu (PF).

Her election to the post at the Zanu (PF) congress in December means she will take her place in the ruling party’s politburo and, some have speculated, could even propel her into the increasingly acrimonious race to be nominated as her 90-year-old husband’s successor ahead of the party’s congress in December.
