Chingwizi horrors

Last year, it was reported that female members of the Chingwizi camp, desperate to feed their families, exchanged food for sexual favours from male police officers who control distribution of supplies. There was not much protest from influential voices and very little objection from women in power – the likes of Joice Mujuru, Oppah Muchinguri and Olivia Muchena.

Next there were reports of government attempting to cajole the Chingwizi settlers into relocating to a new area, without giving them compensation. There were also rumours that the government intended to use the settlers for growing sugar cane for an ethanol project. The latest news is more frightening. The Progressive Teachers Union claims that 100 girls – between the age of 10 and 12 – have become pregnant. Still not one person in power has lifted a finger. Of 2,500 pupils in the camp, 400 have dropped out to help provide for their families.

If Grace Mugabe wants to flex her newfound muscle, she should begin with the abuse of girls and statutory rape in Chingwizi. –Till next week, my pen is capped. Jerà. Twitter: @JeraAfrika
