The provincial executive led by Retired Brigadier General Callisto Gwanetsa unanimously endorsed Mugabe despite concerns over his age and health. They also retained Joice Mujuru as the second secretary and vice president.
“We met as a provincial executive recently to deliberate on a number of issues but among other resolutions we agreed to retain our leader despite his age because we feel he has the qualities to lead the party,” said a highly placed source within Zanu (PF).
“If the President hints at retirement, the first people to know are us who are in the structures of the party. He has not done that so we are retaining him,” said the source.
Zanu (PF) Masvingo provincial spokesman Goddard Dunira said “It is true that we are behind President Robert Mugabe. We do not know any other leader besides him.”
Mugabe controversially won last year’s presidential elections and critics say his policies have ruined the country’s once vibrant economy.
He shuttles constantly between Harare and the Far East to seek medical treatment.
