Following a meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) at Harvest House in Harare on Friday, the party announced that Jessie Majome, Eddie Cross and Douglas Mwonzora will lead some of committees.
“Several committees were set up by the Executive to deal with the business of Congress. Jessie Majome will head the constitutional review committee, …Eddie Cross the policy review committee while…Douglas Mwonzora will head the Information and Publicity committee, among the several committees set up today,” said MDC in a statement.
The meeting, chaired by Tsvangirai, was called to discuss preparations for the congress and the ongoing national economic crisis marked by rising company closures, a distressed Treasury and ballooning unemployment.
The NEC, said MDC in the statement, deliberated on elections of party leaders at various levels and resolved to use the congress to review its constitution as well as policy, in addition to revisiting its roadmap to the next general election in 2018 and its programmes.
“The Executive also debated and adopted a template of the Congress that clearly spells out how the process will be conducted. The highlight of that template is that any person who qualifies can contest for any position in the party and that campaigning will take place in a free and fair manner,” said MDC.
It dismissed the recent ruling of a tribunal set up by the rival offshoot Renewal Team led by former secretary general, Tendai Biti, that tried Tsvangirai and national chairman, Lovemore Moyo, purportedly finding them guilty of several offences, among them flouting the party constitution.
In addition, it condemned the recent arrest of a 20-year old University of Zimbabwe (UZ) student, Romeo Musemburi, who is accused of asking a shady Facebook character, Baba Jukwa, for guns to overthrow the government.
“The MDC National Executive took great exception to the government’s pre-occupation with the Baba Jukwa issue at the expense of pressing national issues. In short, the government is on Facebook while the people of Zimbabwe suffer.
