Mugeyi pleased with fitness levels

Former Zimbabwe national team striker, Wilfred Mugeyi, said this week he was pleased with the fitness levels of his side Amazulu ahead of the start of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership season.

Mugeyi, who starred in the South African topflight in the 1990s, is now an assistant coach at Amazulu and said he was hopeful the Durban-based side would do better than their current ninth position.

Having begun the season playing well, Usuthu failed to keep pace with the chasing pack. That they failed to land the prestigious Top8 shows a club lacking both fitness and depth.

Mugeyi believed that unlike in the previous seasons, where they were always early candidates for relegation due to a poor start, Usuthu would not only launch an early fight as they did last year, but also maintain that and hopefully finish among the best teams.

“We have begun well at training and most of our players have shown a good level of fitness for people coming from a long break. It is really promising and a start similar to what we had, if not better than, last season, would be great,” said Mugeyi.

“We would not want to end there, though, because we learnt last season that we have to keep playing well and remain fit till the end if we are to achieve something in this league. The last days are always the toughest; when clubs start chasing the championship and others try to avoid the drop. I’m happy that all our players reported for duty for their first sessions on Monday and I’m pleased that all of them are looking sharp.

“At the end of last season, we gave our players a programme they were supposed to follow and they did exactly what they were told and I must give credit to them. I really loved what I saw in the first day of our training.

Amazulu have two other Zimbabweans in their ranks in goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini, who plays the last season of his current contract, and defender Carlington Nyadombo, who still has two more seasons to play for the club.
