The Machipanda line links the port of Beira to Machipanda station which is 317 kilometres to the west, on the border with Zimbabwe. It should have been completely upgraded by the end of 2006, but the then concession holder, Ricon, a partnership between Indian state companies Rites and Ircon, failed to honour its commitments. In December 2010 the Mozambican government decided to rescind the contract with RICON.
Because of the deplorable state of the line, reconstruction restarted in 2012. Nyusi said that he has received guarantees from the director of the Mozambican port and rail company CFM that trains will soon return to the route.
