Supa Challenge, who was ridden by Sherman, paid out $5,400 to his owners and handlers – but not much for the punters, as he gave out only $1.40 for a place and $2.70 for him and second-placed Picadilly. The combination of Picadilly and Antwun were way behind on $3.80.
Supa Challenge who opened betting at 5/1 closed at 28/10 for which the punters did not get much as the horse went into the race as the overwhelming favourite.
Out of the total stake money of $9,000, Picadilly took home $1 800 and Young Antwun $1,125. There was also $675 reserved for Autumn J, which was ridden by Francos Naude.
For the record, Supa Challenge won by 1.25 lens off Picadilly and finished the race in 11.09 seconds. The race had 11 horses with Buck Up at the tail of the 1,200 metre race.
All in all, there were 10 races on the cards with the Soccer World Maiden Juvenile title going to Macfly. Montelupo took the Cricket World Maiden Plate, Copper Bay, the Soccer Six Merited 84 Handicap, Juelz, the Inn Running Maiden Plate, Detective Casey, the Soccer 4 Merit Rated 55 Handicap which was run over 1 800 metres.
Matox took the 10 Merit Rated 75 Handicap while You’re So Vain is the Mashonaland Holdings Merit Rated 65 Champion. Not to be outdone was Sido who took the 1 400 metre Fedex Merit Rated 65 Handicap. Amy Bronkhorst’s Thriller In Manilla took home $4,500 after winning the Redan Merit Rated 85 Handicap.
The Mashonaland Turf Club announced that they would now accept entries for the Republic Cup, the last of the three major events on the racing calendar. The Republic Cup, which at one time was the richest event in Zimbabwe falls in the same category as the OK Grand Challenge. Both are Grade Two races and offer stake money of $40,000, much less than the Grade One Castle Tankard that offers $50,000.
