Zifa offer insight into Banyana friendlies

The Zimbabwe Football Association said this week the series of friendly matches between the Mighty Warriors and rivals South Africa would be handy in coming up with a side that could ably compete in the regional youth games scheduled for end of this year.

The latest in a series of duels between the two sides was played at Rufaro Stadium last Friday afternoon. The exciting match ended in a goalless draw – two months after the regional rivals also drew 2-2 at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg.

Xolisani Gwesela, the ZIFA Communications Manager, said Zimbabwe would be using the friendly games to prepare for the Under-20 Zone VI Youth games, scheduled for December.

“The team we currently have is a mix of Under-20 and senior players. We are in the process of building our team and the match against South Africa gave us a chance to assess the players,” said Gwesela.

On the other hand, the South African senior national women’s team will meanwhile use the friendly matches are part of preparations for the ninth edition of the African Women’s Championships that will be held in Namibia in October.

Zambia knocked the Mighty Warriors out in the qualifying stages of the competition.
