Ziome wins Masvingo Grand Prix

Munashe Ziome is the winner of Masvingo Chess Grand Prix held at Flamboyant hotel from the 19-20th of July. He finished with 6,5 /7 games of play.He only drew one game in the final round to cement his win in his first major win in a tourney.

He defeated tournament favorite Spencer Masango in round 2. Emerald Mushore also lost to Tawanda Pondo and Lewis Kahoba before drawing one of his games to finish with 4,5 Points. Heath Darare was second with 6 points. Elisha Thabo,Lewis Kahoba all had 6 points. Spencer Masango, Castro Sibanda and Moses Mutipforo all had 5,5 points out of 7 rounds of play.

Elisha Chimbamu who led in the first day with a perfect score put up a disappointing show when he lost to Ziome and Thabo to finish with 5 points out of 7 games and ended up on position ten out of 97 participants. Valentine Pasipanodya of the University of Zimbabwe was the best lady of the tournament eclipsing Colleta Wakuruwarehwa the ladies National Champion. Betty Magaramombe of Support Unit was the second best lady with 4 points.

The tourney had a lot of surprises and it shows that chess is growing for real and people are improving vastly through the use of machines like Rybka, Fritz to name but a few machines used by the chess players. The tourney was run by Clive Mpambela and Elton mhangarayi of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation.

Meanwhile Prince edward will host a chess festival on the 26 th of July.
