Civil society to hold press briefing ahead of SADC summit

Local and international civil society organisation comprising Amnesty International (AI), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights will hold a press briefing in Harare on Thursday ahead of the SADC summit.

The SADC Heads of State and Government conference will take place in the resort town of Victoria Falls on August 17 and 18 where President Robert Mugabe will take over the regional bloc chair from Malawi.

The CSO briefing, according to a statement, “will highlight the human rights concerns that SADC should be addressing in the following key member states: Angola, Malawi, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.”

Keynote speakers include Deprose Muchena, the AI director for southern Africa, Dzimbahwe Chimbga, ZLHR projects manager and Tiseke Kasambala, HRW director for the region.

A broader grouping of local CSOs is heading for Bulawayo where it will discuss the summit and seek to engage southern African leaders.
