Jambanja in Zanu (PF) Camp

The divisions within Robert Mugabe’s Zanu (PF) party were evident at the just ended Women’s League congress. Grace Mugabe’s appointment to the position of Women’s League Chairperson was ostensibly intended to foster unity at a time when the party might implode, as senior members jostle for leadership in the post Mugabe era.

However, divisions in the party were very apparent with reports of vote buying, Women’s League members being kidnapped and senior party members traded insults in the open. The Zanu (PF) succession debate is a drama which contains all the ingredients of a box office hit: murder, jealousy, kidnap, lies and helicopter explosions.

Zanu (PF) was keen to make up for the poorly organised youth congress. Donations for the women’s congress were sourced ahead of the event. From the outset, it was clear that the succession war had begun. Emmerson Mnangangwa, a presidential hopeful, donated 20 head of cattle and 24hours later VP Joice Mujuru topped his contribution by delivering enough food and clothes to cater for a small country – five Tonnes of rice, 30Tonnes of maize meal, 20 boxes and 3,500 T-shirts, among other things.
