Meanwhile at a tournament held at Causeway from the 9_12 th of August DIon Moyo emerged the winner of the Men's Nationals in the absence of Makoto, Mushore Emerald, Sibanda Castro and Spencer Masango who were on National duty in Norway. Elisha Chimbamu was second with 6,5 points half a point behind Dion Moyo the winner.
Elisha Thabo and Lloyd Moyo were tied on third position with 6 points. Ronald Chimanzi found the going tough and he scored only half a point. In the ladies section Valentine Pasipanodya was the best lady with a perfect score of 9 out 9 games. Linda Shava was the second best with 7 points followed Bridget Pumuyo with 6,5 points.
Refiloe Mudodo had 1,5 points in a tightly contested Nationals. They also took part in the absence of Tatenda and Paidashe Zengeni, Colleta Wakuruwarehwa, Nomalungelo Mathe and Rhoda Masiyazi whose game caused broke a record as the quickest game at the chess olympiads.
Nomalungelo Mathe 's performance earned her a tiltle of Women Candidate Master becoming Zimbabwe's second tiltled lady after WCM Paidaishe Zengeni.
In the Candidates section Gift Sithole came first with 8,5 points out of 9 games of play. Cevan Murerwa came second with 8 points, while Anesu Mukwepa came third. He defeated Jemba Jemusse in an interesting tactical game which was full of sacrifices.
Officers Rugare Muchena,and Albert Maketo finished closely behind with 7 points. Munashe Ziome, Byron Gurajena and Anesu Masimba all were tied on 7 points. Greenwell Chinyama was the best scholar with 6,5 points followed by Jemba Jemusse.
Kudakwashe Zimbowa was the best under 14 player. Rumbidzai Mawire was the best lady with 5 points. The tournament was run by Farirai Gumbe and Ivan Chivese with the assistance of Tobby Brook. It was well run and the time management was well done as all the games were played according to the schedule.
On a sad note the Zimbabwe chess fraternity lost the former ZISCA Chairperson Mr Richard Govathson last week. He passed on at Parirenyatwa hospital. Hundreds bad him farewell and was burried in Mashava. He will be sadly missed by many chess players in Masvingo and Zimbabwe as a whole. May his soul rest in eterna peace.
