Kurauone Chihwayi, the party’s secretary for international relations, has called for a probe team to investigate and bring to book the criminal grabbing of conservan-cies by military chiefs and Zanu (PF) stalwarts.

“We have noted with great concern the involvement of Zanu (PF) officials in the administrati-on and ownership of conservan-cies,” said Chihwayi. “The MDC is calling upon President Robert Mugabe to appoint a probe team to look into the problems haunting the chaotic hunting sector and criminal grabbing of conservancies such as Save, Midlands, Gwai, Chiredzi and Bubi by members of his party and some military chiefs.”

According to the statement, the activities of party stalwarts have relegated powerless and poor rural people to miserable servitude under the cover of employment creation in their own areas. “The political control of conservancies by Zanu (PF) officials and sympathisers is a recipe for sickening poverty and economic disaster for the ordinary people of Zimbabwe,” said Chihwayi.

“It is evident that there is lack of political will in the party to create a conducive environment for economic growth and a better life for everybody.”

The MDC condemned Mugabe’s blanket blessing of businesses, including conservancies, being run by military chiefs without verification or investigation of procedures used to acquire those enterprises.

“The scramble for Save and other conservancies by military chiefs and party stalwarts has raised eyebrows and triggered the need to thoroughly investigate the irregularities in the apportionment of many conservancies and the issuing of hunting permits,” said Chihwayi.

“The discriminatory allocation of hunting permits by the partisan Mugabe administration remains an issue of major concern to the progressive but cheated and abused Zimbabwean populace especially those staying in rural areas,” he added.

The MDC demanded transparency and fairness in the provision of hunting permits in various conservancies across the country, threatening to hold Mugabe and his regime accountable over their criminal grabbing of conservancies and abuse of authority at the expense of local people in the distribution of wealth in their areas.
