Poetry slam attracts performers from the United States

The Shoko Festival international poetry slam, now in its fourth year, attracts poets from countries such as Germany, Canada, Botswana and South Africa, making it one of the biggest spoken word platforms in Africa.

This year’s event, on September 27 at Alex Sports Club in Milton Park, will be hosted by Tinofireyi Zhou, known as Aerosol, and will be complemented by performances from Buddy Wakefield and Ra Brown, both from the USA.

Poets taking part compete by reading or reciting their work and are judged by a panel from the audience.

Shoko Festival, from September 25 to 28, is Zimbabwe’s fastest growing international arts festival. It will feature electronic dance music, DJ parties, hip-hop, dancehall, comedy, spoken word, new media discussions and workshops.
