Tokwe Mukosi contractor downs tools

The cash-strapped government has failed to raise USD40 million for the completion of the Tokwe Mukosi dam and the contractor, Salin Impregilo, has downed tools over non-payment.

The completion of the giant dam now hangs in the balance as government officials said there were no indications that finances would improve anytime soon. Work on the dam construction came to a halt two months ago and the Italian contractor has now sent the workers home.

A company official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they were waiting for payment now believed to be around USD40 million.

Masvingo provincial administrator Felix Chikovo confirmed that work had not resumed due to financial problems. "We are just waiting for funds to resume the project," was all he would say.

Environment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere last week confirmed that the government was “seeking other ways of getting funding and the only option which is available is to issue bonds for the project”.
