All set for Kariba Fishing Invitational

The 53rd edition of the Kariba Invitational Tiger Fishing Tournament roars into life at its traditional venue on October 21- 24 with more than 1,000 contestants expected.

Fishing worm sellers are lining up the roads, anticipating a boom in business. “This is our busiest time of the year, and we are ready. We have enough resources to take care of the many fishermen,” said Samson Maneta, who travels from Harare to Karoi to sell his worms.

Rodney Mackay of Nissan won the event last year with a total of 52.6 kgs from 23 catches, followed by Andrew Bailey of Charter Africom, who amassed 50.61 kgs from 21 catches. Dean Le Rouy of Remmington Charter was third with 49.45 kgs from 22 catches.

All in all Charter Africom won the tournament with a total of 130.6 kgs from 58 catches, followed by Charter Hino Swift with 128.53 kgs from 46 catches.

The Kariba Tiger Fishing Tournament is the world’s biggest fresh water fishing competition and draws the world’s best fishermen from as far afield as the United Kingdom and the USA. Closer home, it draws contestants from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, and Mauritius.

Apart from cash incentives, winners of the tournament stand to walk away with motor vehicle prizes and floating trophies.

For the residents of Kariba, the tournament offers with the opportunity to make money through various business ventures ranging from vending to art.
