Biti, Ncube to join forces

The re-unification agreement signed between MDC led by Welshman Ncube and The Renewal Team is a vital stepping stone towards the creation of a formidable opposition, say parties to the pact.

Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga, secretary general of the MDC, said the re-unification would help mobilise financial and human resources from a wider base, and level the electoral field ahead of the 2018 elections.

“If we continue to fight in our small pockets as opposition, our chances of success will be as limited as our small corners. If we don’t acknowledge this we are just fooling ourselves – this is a fatal mistake we must avoid,” she said.

Jacob Mafume, spokesperson for The Renewal Team, said the creation of a common platform by opposition parties was the way to go.

“The re-unification would help create a viable and formidable opposition bonded by a common agenda and values,” said Mafume.

Nelson Chamisa, MDC-T national organiser, told The Zimbabwean that it was on record that his party had defeated its rivals in the past, but the need to level the political playing field remained crucial.

“MDC-T has defeated Zanu (PF) and its presidential candidate, Robert Mugabe, with a wide margin before. Dr Grace Mugabe, Zanu (PF) and the Renewal Team-MDC coalition will be swept away by the MDC-T cyclone,” said Chamisa, insisting that his party would not participate in any election without agreed reforms and conditions for free and fair polls.
