Chitungwiza demolitions spill into courts

The Chitungwiza town clerk, George Makumbe, is appearing at the Chitungwiza Magistrates’ Court today for allegedly ordering demolition of houses without a court order as required at law.

Chitungwiza Residents Trust reported the dawn demolitions case at Chitungwiza Police Station on September 28, 2014, citing Makunde as the suspect. A docket RRB2193402 was opened.

Some 68 houses were allegedly demolished by the local authority early hours on the day in question, against a court ruling which was granted by the Provincial Magistrate, Marehwanazvo Gofa.

The ruling was in favour of Chitungwiza residents on April 24, 2014, stopping the demolitions. Makunde is being charged with a contempt of court.

Chitungwiza Town Council with the blessings of the Ministry of Local Government conducted an audit of structures in the town and resolved to demolish over 28 000 houses and business buildings regarded as illegal.

In a move observers described as a near U-turn by the city authorities, some of the targeted houses would be regularised while others face demolition.
