Karate coach braces for world champs

Zimbabwe Junior National Karate Team coach, Sensei Victor Bhunu, will next week join other continental mentors of the sport in South Africa for a seminar organised by the Japan Karate Association.

The seminar, to be conducted by globally acclaimed instructors from Australia, Brazil and Japan, is likely to see Bhunu become part of the world’s Karate hall of fame, if he is upgraded to the famous black belt third dan degree after the course.

“The coaching clinic will give us latest techniques used on a global scale in preparation for the World Karate Championships to be held in South Africa next year. Participants will also get an opportunity to preview some of the latest rules to be used during the championships,” said Bhunu.

He added that the event, which comes as Zimbabwe is also preparing to take part in the 50th edition of the All Africa Games scheduled for September 4–19 in Brazzaville, would help the country recruit the best competitive national karate side.

“The world is now dynamic. So it is crucial for us to continue acquiring more skills and knowledge so that we keep abreast with trends,” he said.

Despite setbacks caused by financial constraints, Zimbabwe’s Karatekas are among the best in Southern Africa. In June, they amassed a record 26 medals at the Zone six championships in Zambia where they shrugged off challenge from participants from Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

Joe Rugwete, the Zimbabwe Karate Union president, is on record saying government seems to look down on minority sports like Karate in terms of sponsorship as his organisation has on several occasions been forced to operate with an insignificant budget .
