
Dube worked with the 20-year-old in the Highlanders junior structures before the midfielder’s departure for the United States where he is now at North Eastern University in Massachusetts.
Mpofu, who excels as an attacking midfielder but can also fill the anchorman’s role, produced some splendid performances at Crushing Soccer Academy last year, bagging 13 goals and seven assists.
He was consequently drafted into New England Schools Junior All Stars and named in the America top 25 players. It is such accolades Dube believes provide further evidence of young player’s emergence as a national asset.
“He is an excellent player who is also capable academically. When we went to Singapore for the Under-15 World Cup in 2010 he was our team captain, he was also one of the team’s best players.
“He has the ability to score goals and also create chances for his teammates. At the Highlanders juniors we used to play him on the right side of midfield where he did very well for us. He is really good enough for this group of Under-23s,” Dube said.
Coach Calisto Pasuwa and his assistant Soul Chaminuka are putting together a new U-23 side consisting of exciting names such as Walter Musona, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Nqobizitha Masuku Praise Tonha and Wisdom Mutasa.
