Mukondiwa will be one of the three judges to take charge of Catherine Phiri’s WBC International silver welterweight title, according to promoter Christopher Malunga of Oriental Boxing Promotions.
Although there is a referee in boxing, it is the judges who determine who wins a fight, as they make a decision on whether a point has been produced or not. Mukondiwa will on also have the opportunity to judge the WBC International welterweight title fight between Zimbabwe’s Charles Manyuchi and challenger Daivis Caserres. This will be Manyuchi’s first title defence of the WBC International belt he won three months ago.
Catherine Phiri, who is not related to the renowned former world champion Esther, is also defending her title for the first time.
Mukondiwa will work alongside the likes of Kenya’s Lilian Olelo and South Africa’s Theo Sampoo for the Phiri fight. For the Manyuchi fight, Mukondiwa and Okelo will be in control of proceedings as well as Zambia’s William Sekeleti.
The secretary general of the Zimbabwe Boxing Board of Control Gilbert Munetsi said the decision by the WBC was a show of confidence in Mukondiwa and more importantly in Zimbabwean boxing.
This is Mukondiwa’s second high profile international engagement in two months after he was invited to officiate in another WBC tournament in the DRC.
