Pasuwa, Chaminuka tussle for top accolade

Dynamos coach Calisto Pasuwa and his ZPC Kariba counterpart Soul Chaminuka’s battle for this year’s Castle Lager Premiership title has also turned them into top favourites for the Coach of the Year accolade.

Pasuwa is in line for an incredible fourth consecutive league title with Dynamos, while Chaminuka took charge of newcomers ZPC Kariba early in the year and turned their bid to avoid relegation into an improbable title challenge that has spilled into the very final weeks of the season.

At one stage, the unfashionable Mashonaland West outfit even led the log standings, after they went for 19 matches without defeat. ZPC Kariba’s successful campaign has been founded on a rigid defence, but there is more to their play than just ‘parking the bus.’ There is a system and pattern to some of their moves, with Caps United discard Pride Tafirenyika’s skill and speed of thought in midfield making them extremely dangerous on the break.

But what makes Chaminuka’s feat more remarkable is that he has worked with a team consisting largely of a mixture of relative unknowns and recycled names that have been rejected by other teams over the last few seasons.

Pasuwa’s Dynamos, on the other hand, had a slow start to the campaign, but have since moved up their gears. They went into their match against Harare City on Wednesday at the back of a 15-match unbeaten run.

Dynamos style has not always been easy on the eye but Pasuwa somehow manages to get the results and it has been his hallmark since taking over from Lloyd Mutasa midway through the 2011 season.

His critics however insist he must compliment his domestic success with some breakthrough on the continental stage where he has failed to guide Dynamos to the group stages of the African Champions League in his last three attempts.
