SA’s Bidvest Wits after Chemhanza schoolboy

Chemhanza Secondary School football star Learnmore Muyambo has attracted the interest of South African topflight side Bidvest Wits, the Zimbabwean has learnt.

Muyambo, a defensive midfielder touted as the ‘new Ezrom Nyandoro’ by his school coach Never Mhandu, caught the eye at last year’s COPA Coca-Cola Africa training camp in South Africa.

Zimbabwe emerged overall victors at the event, with another Chemhanza prodigy Tatenda Tumba being crowned both the top goal-scorer and player of the tournament.

But it was 17-year-old team captain Muyambo who impressed Wits scouts, Mhandu said.

“They fell for his style right away and their interest has remained strong. He spend the entire August holidays at the club but he had to come back to write his O’Levels.

“They have promised to invite him again after the exams but there is a very strong possibility that they will take him in. He is a very good player, with a style similar to that of Nyandoro.

“Although he did not make it into the COPA Coca Cola All Star Africa team, he was undoubtedly one our best players. He has a great future ahead of him,” Mhandu said.

Muyambo could become the latest in a string of stars being churned out by Chemhanza, a rural boarding school in Mashonaland East which recently won the Coca-Cola Under-16 nationals finals for the second consecutive year.

Triangle and Zimbabwe Under-23 defensive linkman Praise Tonha and newly minted Dynamos midfielder Tofirei Okocha, who made his top-flight debut in a recent league match against Shabanie, were groomed at Chemhanza.

Another high-profile product is 17-year-old Tinotenda Munditi, goalkeeper of the tournament at last year’s COPA Coca-cola International camp. He has been one of the star performers in Eastern Region Division One side Mutare City Rovers’ push for promotion into the top flight.
