Student body lobbies govt for land

The Zimbabwe Congress of Students Union (ZICOSU) is lobbying government for land to enable them to construct cheaper halls of residence for students at tertiary institutions.

In an interview after a stakeholders meeting organised by the Zimbabwe Female Students Network in Harare last week, Leopold Chakanyuka, the Secretary General for ZICOSU, said his organisation had engaged the students’ community and organisations working with youths on the feasibility of the idea and plans were at an advanced stage to take the initiative further.

“We held meetings with students and there is general consensus that the students’ body should come up with practical solutions to addressing the accommodation challenges being faced by students in most tertiary institutions,” said Chakanyuka.

“We would want the organisation to be allocated at least a hectare at each and every tertiary institution and we believe that this will address the challenge of students residing far away from campus,” he added.

The organisation has already engaged the services and expertise of Galaxy Engineering and Vengesai architectural companies who had expressed their interest in giving back to the community through the provision of free consultancy services.

"The construction company will be responsible for leasing out the premises to students until they recover all their money because as an organisation we do not have the financial capacity to finance the project," said Chakanyuka.
