ZIFA bid at Soccerex

The country’s bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 is set to feature prominently in next week’s Soccerex Africa Forum, the continent’s biggest summit of the sport.

The annual event is scheduled for the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on November 4-5. Remy Le Mentec, Soccerex Marketing Logistics Executive, confirmed the presence of ZIFA President Cuthbert Dube among other local officials at the summit.

“We have confirmed the Zimbabwe FA’s presence, and their President will be speaking on the special panel at the conference to speak on the bid to host AFCON 2017. The list of clubs (that will send delegates) will be available shortly,” Le Mentec said.

Zimbabwe is vying with Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya and Sudan to host the continent’s prime football tournament. A previous bid by Zimbabwe culminated in the country being awarded the 2000 edition. But CAF nonetheless moved the tournament to Nigeria and Ghana after inadequate preparations by the hosts. Meanwhile, a number of African and international clubs have confirmed attendance at Soccerex. Among these are Sunderland, Manchester City (both England), Asante Kotoko (Ghana), Zesco United (Zambia), Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs (both South Africa).

The forum is once again set to attract a host of football legends to provide their views on topical issues in the game, with past events attracting the likes of John Barnes, Lucas Radebe, Joseph Antoine Bell and Kalusha Bwalya.
