League games will resume on November 22, following a sabbatical meant to accommodate international games this weekend. But for some Asian fans this presents an opportunity for them to lay their hands on a piece of silverware their clubs might not have in their cabinet, come end of the season.
Liverpool fans, especially, would most likely be interested in getting a feel of the trophy their side blew up on last season, having won it about two decades ago.
Ironically, the BPL Trophy Tour, sponsored by Carlsberg and accompanied by former Liverpool greats that include Robbie Fowler, Patrick Berger, Vladimir Smicer and Jari Litmanen, will carry some sentimental feel for fans of the once all-conquering Super Reds.
Paradoxically, none of those players parading the trophy ever won it, with the Merseysiders having last been to the league podium in the 1989/90, before the Premiership era.
The trophy also made an appearance on the set of First Look Asia at the Channel NewsAsia studio on Monday morning and will also be featured on SportsWorld on today.
It is scheduled to be paraded at various locations around Singapore up to next Friday. Made by Asprey of London, the British royal jewellers, the trophy stands 76cm tall, weighs about 25kg and the raw material – gold, silver and malachite stone – cost in excess of £130.
When league action resumes next weekend, log leaders Chelsea will be looking at further cementing their lead at the top of the log with a home win over West Bromwich Albion, while third-placed title rivals, Manchester City will also seek to steamroll past visiting Swansea, who beat Arsenal 2-1 at home last week.
Manchester United, who replaced Liverpool at seventh position after their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, visit perennial rivals Arsenal on Saturday, each side wishing to appease their legion of followers who will be wishing that Chelsea be caught somewhere along the race.
Liverpool, who slid from seventh to 11th position following their 1-2 home loss to Chelsea last weekend, will seek redemption with a win away at Crystal Palace on Sunday, the same day that second-placed Southampton will be away to Aston Villa.
