Chess festival for primary schools

Halingbury Primary school will host a chess festival for primary school going ages. There will be under 10 and 13 age groups.The organiser of the tournament Farirai Gumbe said that the deadline for the registration will be the 28th of November.

In line with the development of the game of chess it is vital to have tournaments of this magnitude to improve the depth of the junior chess team. The games start at 0830 and end at 1500

hours. It will be an individual tournament involving boys and girls. This will be a swiss run tournament of 5 rounds. We expect a lot of fireworks with the likes of Twin Rivers, Hallingbury and Avondale – to name but a few of the province's best primary chess playing schools.

Meanwhile on the international scene, Carlsen is leading the former champion Vishy Anand 4-3 in seven games played so far. Their seventh round was a pulsating draw in which Anand sacrificed his white Bishop for two pawns.

Anand then defended very well to stop Carlsen from winning another consecutive game after they both blundered in their sixth game but Carlsen took the game. A thriller is expected again today as they play their 8th game. The whole chess world will be glued to their machines today to watch the match of the century.
