Difficult decision

Dear Aunty Lisa

I am a married woman aged 25 and I am having a funny feeling of frustration but I just can’t figure out what it is that is making me feel this way. I have issues on deciding whether to continue with my job or start my own project. I am caught in between what I love and what I need.

I need the financial stability offered by my current job, which has nothing to do with anything I am passionate. Yet there is a great opportunity for me to start pursuing what I love that may generate profits with time. I am on the verge of making that decision that could be the best, yet could also be the worst in my life. This is affecting my social life and at home I am moody and sometimes rude to my family. I don’t know if this is normal. Please advise me on what to do? – Anastasia

Dear Anastasia

What is happening to you is pretty normal, you are simply tense because of the situation you are in that is demanding you of making the decision you will not later regret. I am a bit concerned though that if the situation persists you may end up suffering from acute anxiety.

You need to make your decision and stick to it without feeling bad about it so that it does not affect you and the people close to you. Under normal circumstances it is common practice that someone follows their passion and grows professionally while enjoying what they do.

But it appears your circumstances are not normal, you are dependent on the financial returns your current job is giving you. It is worse if you have people looking up to you for financial support – because you end up knowing that your decision will not only affect yourself.

A great man, Mohammed Ali, once said a lot of people fail because they are afraid to take risks. There are times when it is all worth it to risk everything and make a decision that will prove very fruitful in the end. Making a choice to leave your job and starting your own project may only mean struggling in the first few months and being on the runway for a long flight. Nothing special and successful comes easy, so you need to really think about this and decide on what it is going to be. Otherwise worrying and pondering on what move to take will eat you up without taking you anywhere. – Aunty Lisa
