Litmus test for Chombo as Marondera votes out mayor

Marondera councillors have expressed a vote of no confidence in Mayor Anthony Makwindi. Eleven of the town’s 12 councillors, eight from Zanu (PF) and three from MDC-T on Monday unanimously resolved to oust Makwindi, who they described as uncooperative and too passive.

“Makwindi has become a liability, manipulated by management into disrespecting residents’ expectations. The town cannot be held to ransom by a non-delivering mayor playing yes-man to management,” said a Zanu (PF) councillor who refused to be identified for fear of victimisation.

The deputy mayor will take over his responsibilities until Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo makes a ruling on the issue. The vote of no confidence passed despite spirited efforts by management to protect Makwindi.

The city fathers indicated that service delivery had grounded to a standstill with some residential areas going for weeks without water while refuse collection was no longer existent. Makwindi, who reportedly rushed to seek Chombo’s protection last Friday, was not picking his mobile number which went on ringing hours on end.

Chombo has a long record of protecting corrupt and incompetent Zanu (PF) councillors and staff while kicking out MDC officials.
