PSL roundup

Energy side ZPC Kariba are on the verge of breaking the 34-year-old jinx for a newly-promoted club to win the PSL championship in their first year in the topflight league.

Since 1980 when the PSL was put together, only Zvishavane-based FC Platinum came close to breaking that trend in 2010, when they were eventually beaten to the trophy by Dynamos on the last match day of the season.

With two games left before the curtain comes down on the supreme domestic league, Kauya Katuruturu, just a point behind log leaders DeMbare, will wrap up the contest if they beat the three-time champions in this weekend’s fixture.

In their last encounter, ZPC dominated Harare City and put the game beyond the municipal side’s reach, courtesy of a 3-2 victory, while Dembare struggled to contain Methembe Ndlovu’s already-relegated Bantu Rovers and could only afford a 0-0 stalemate.

The two results put ZPC on the advantage going into what seems to be the championship title decider. “I think we are now in the race. We have been fighting to avoid relegation and in the last games, the top four finish, but now I can safely say the title is our target at this stage. That campaign will begin with our clash with Dynamos,” said Saul Chaminuka, the ZPC coach.

Throughout the season, the side has had to bear the burden of holding training sessions in Kariba and then traveling to Harare for home matches, as their ground, Chaminuka Stadium, had been declared unfit to host PSL matches by the soccer mother body. However, that did not weaken them and only a little more effort could get them crowned this year.

Meanwhile, the battle for survival at the bottom of the log continues with Shabanie Mine and Black Rhinos hoping to find the winning formula to escape the chop, as Rovers and Chiredzi FC have gone.

The Chinda boys and Chauya Chipembere need to collect at least four points each in the remaining two fixtures if they are to survive, and hope that the other teams above them like City, Triangle and Chapungu lose the same number of points.

Although Triangle seem to have re-discovered their winning formula, the airmen and City are struggling, as they both failed to collect points over the weekend.
