Katsande to return in February

Zimbabwean midfielder Willard “Salt&Vinegar” Katsande might be out of action for the next month or two, after he pulled an abdomen muscle in Kaizer Chiefs’ ABSA Premiership game against Chippa United.

Chiefs won the tie 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane over the weekend to remain the only unbeaten side in the league in 16 games. The Naturena giants also stretched their lead on the log to 13 points over the now second-placed Wits University.

While Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns and now Wits have continued to exchange places in second position, Amakhosi have continued to soar as they seek to win back the league crown they surrendered to Sundowns last season. Katsande, a regular and one of the main reasons Chiefs have rediscovered their glamour touch, told The Zimbabwean he was still in pain early this week.

“I’m feeling a bit better with less pain compared to after the game, but it is still painful,” said the player. “I am yet to see the team doctors, who will then prepare a comprehensive recovery programme for me and outline when I will be able to return to light training, before I start working out with the rest of the team. I hope the injury is not going keep me out of action for a long time.”

Katsande should all work well in his recovery; he would be back in contention for a starting berth in mid-February, which would be after the Africa Cup of Nations final in Equatorial Guinea.

“The team is on the right track and we hope to close the festive season on a higher note. At the moment all is going according to plan and coach Stuart Baxter has done tremendously well.”
