Mugabe will be away in the Far East till January 15 and Mnangagwa will be acting president.
Reports indicate that Mnangagwa, who succeeded in campaigning his bitter rival, Joice Mujuru off the race to succeed Mugabe at the ruling Zanu (PF)’s national congress, is eyeing the presidency.
He now partners the little known Phelekezela Mphoko, a former diplomat, in the co-vice presidency in which he is senior.
Mnangagwa and his strategists launched a campaign against Mujuru and persuaded Mugabe to offload her after claims that she had plotted to remove him from power.
Mujuru beat Mnangagwa to the vice presidency in 2004 when Mugabe changed the party constitution to make way for a woman following an attempted palace coup organised by the new VP who heads a rival faction.
