The South African-based Kapowezha said the culprits had hacked into his email and were sending out messages to his contacts, appealing for funds purporting to be the former Warriors player – who is ostensibly “stranded in Europe while attending to a family crisis”.
“Am sorry to bother you with this. I am currently in Ukraine due to some urgent matters to help my ill cousin, she was diagnosed with (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) – a type of Blood Cancer in 2009 and had been undergoing treatment since. The news of her illness arrived to me as an emergency and she needs family supports to keep her alive,” reads part of a message the hackers sent out to the former player’s contact, including this reporter.
“The hospital management is demanding for a deposit before they can carry out the surgery operation to save her life, and I travelled down here with little money because I never expected things to turn out this way.
“I need a loan from you and I will surely pay back as soon as I get back home. My phone is currently invalid because I couldn't roam my number to Ukraine due to the short time I had to prepare for this trip. Please let me know if you can be of help. I’ll be pleased to read from you soon regarding my request.”
In an interview, Kapowezha advised fans to disregard the messages. “Those messages are not from me. I was hacked and I am still trying to sort the issue out. I am sorry to the contacts that have been sent such messages,” he said.
