Not only did Louis van Gaal’s boys get their revenge over the Merseysiders at the weekend, but their position on the log also places them in a territory largely familiar to them during the past 20 years.
A 3-0 drubbing of an out-of-sorts Liverpool on Sunday saw United jump to third position on the log, as Liverpool slid further to a distant 10th position and out of sight in the fight for their first league crown in more than 20 years.
Liverpool’s woeful defending cost them the league title they so much deserved last season, but failure to learn from that downfall has seen them easily give away points as they slide back to a side competing more for survival than anything else in the Barclays Premiership.
Even their staunchest of supporters have disappeared from social networks, where they made a lot of noise during the whole of last season and earlier on in this campaign. Bit by bit, the Red Devils have meanwhile, come back into the reckoning and taken back their seats among some of the best. But is that revival complete? An away trip to Aston Villa should give one more answer to that question on Saturday, as Liverpool try to salvage lost pride with a home tie against another tough opponent – Arsenal on Sunday.
Last season, Liverpool supporters were on a high when they met Arsenal in a similar fixture. The 0-3 defeat they got from Manchester United last week was a 3-0 win against the same opponent in the corresponding fixture last season, as they coursed to a 5-0 drubbing of the Gunners the following week.
United have enjoyed their revenge and paid back Brendan Rogers in the same coin he lent them last season, but will this be pay-back time for Arsenal as well?
