Billiat seeks goals

Zimbabwean midfielder Khama Billiat said this week that he would be aiming to score more goals when the Absa Premiership season resumes next month, as his outfit seeks to defend the championship.

Sundowns, who have 31 points from 17 matches, trail log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by a hefty 15 points, but have a game in hand that could reduce the gap to 12, one less than the number the Brazilians overturned when they eventually dislodged the Amakhosi to win the title last season.

It would be difficult this time because the Pretoria-based outfit had more games in hand and less pressure compared to the Soweto giants, who were competing in Africa. Chiefs are back in Africa later this season, but so are Sundowns.

Billiat has netted four goals and provided one assist in his 10 league appearances this term, which came after he shook-off a nagging metatarsal injury. "My dream is to have more goals when the season begins in a few weeks’ time," said Billiat in an interview this week.

“The idea, from my perspective, will be to pile as much pressure as possible on Kaizer Chiefs. We can only do this by scoring goals. Two seasons ago, while I was still at Ajax, I scored six goals and last year I only scored four due to the long injury layoff that kept me out until the beginning of this season.

"This season I have scored four and created a few for my team-mates, even though I started the season on the sidelines. I know I can do better with the second round upon us and during this mid-season break, I'm working on improving my finishing."

Billiat believed his combination with countryman Cuthbert Malajila would help their cause.

"Since I came here, Malajila has been supportive on and off pitch. He is a great player and we click very well. I enjoy playing with him because he makes things easier for me and always boosts my confidence”
