Plenty to celebrate – for some

Christmas 2014 was a bleak event. In a country where +80% are jobless, there is little money for merrymaking. But if you are a Mugabe, 2014 was certainly a good year. After all, the head of the house survived a coup attempt – allegedly – and the bossy wife completed a PhD in record time – supposedly.

Virgin Bona had a multimillion dollar wedding and Chatunga got his 15 minutes of fame in a smoke-filled nightclub. For the Mugabes, there was plenty to celebrate.

President Robert Mugabe and his family flew over 10,000km to Singapore – because Kariba or Vic Falls won’t do – seemingly oblivious to the troubles back home. To show us plebs what Christmas is like for the privileged few, Robert Mugabe Jnr was kind enough to post, online, photographs of the Mugabes having a gay old time in Singapore. How nice of him to let us experience a joyful Christmas – even if it is only vicariously and at our expense.

Even though it is a new year, life for the majority remains the same – if not worse. The much-hyped ZimAsset has yielded zero results.

According to the ZCTU, 700 companies shut down between July and December 2014 alone, resulting in 9,000 job losses.

This trend looks set to continue as, already, mining giant Zimasco will shortly retrench 400 workers and government is mulling a similar exercise in the civil service.
