Zimbabwe's Mugabe assumes African Union chair

President Robert Mugabe, assumed the rotating chairmanship of the African Union here today.

Mugabe is banned from entering most countries in Europe some of whose members have imposed personal sanctions on him. It remains to be seen how his year-long tenure will impact on the Europe-African Union relations.

Mugabe has been president of Zimbabwe since the country's attainment of independence in 1980. He turns 91 next month.

The chairmanship of the African Union, which is ceremonial, rotates annually between the various heads of state.
