Bookmakers into hiding

Unheralded Rock the Country from the Ghokan Terzi yard sent bookmakers into hiding after taking the 2015 Breeders Champions Cup ahead of favourites Gentle Brook and A King Is Born, who could not finish in the placings.

The six-year-old gelden was not among the tipped horses and opened betting at 10/1 before closing at 8/1 for one of his biggest successes at Borrowdale race course, offering punters a heavy $6.30 for a totalisator win.

Rock the Country came out tops ahead of Orbit War and Demitasse with Gentle Brook who was favoured at 5/2 way back in fourth place. Captain’s Tiger failed to make it to the course after he was scratched. All in all, the Breeders Champions Cup attracted 11 of the top horses at Borrowdale.

A King is Born from the Alyson Wright stable was in fifth place just above Madigan which was piloted by Kevin Derere. The disappointment of the race was the five-year-old Copper Bay, which finished last in the race just behind Menacing with champion jockey Quinton Riddle in the saddle. For winning the race Rock the Country offered his combinations $5 700. Orbit War got $1 900 while Demitasse received $1 188 and Gentle Brook $712. The race also paid handsomely with the combination of Rock the Country and Orbit War dishing out $13.50 and those who combined Rock the Country and Demitasse getting $44.30 for every dollar placed.
