FC Platinum carry Zim hopes in Africa

Ambitious Castle Lager Premiership side FC Platinum have a huge responsibility to bring back some shine to Zimbabwean football when they take on Kenya’s Sofapaka in the first leg of the Caf Confederation Cup preliminary round in Nairobi on Sunday.

The Zvishavane-based outfit make their second foray into the jungles of African football at a time when Zimbabwean football is at an all time low after years of abject failure at international level. But there is real hope that if Norman Mapeza’s charges carry on from where they left off last season, they have a good chance of making an impression in Africa.

There is general consensus that the Zimbabwean league made some significant strides last season in terms of standards and competitiveness, and FC Platinum were undoubtedly the standout performers in an absorbing second-half of the season.

Furthermore, the country’s richest club have recruited two of the league’s most talented young midfielders in Brian Muzondiwa and Wellington Kamudyariwa.

Long-term injury casualty Marshal Mudehwe is back in contention and with the likes of Walter Musona, Obrey Chirwa and Wisdom Mutasa, among others, all looking to have a piece of the action, the midfield selection puzzle could prove more of a headache for Mapeza than the Kenyan opposition.

FC Platinum are a side well resourced in every department, with Daniel Veremu, Kelvin Moyo, Aaron Katebe, Gift Bello and Ian Nekate all looking to form a formidable wall in front of goal. Donald Ngoma will carry the team’s hopes for goals upfront with Nelson Mazivisa also waiting in the wings for his chance.

Being the country’s sole representatives in Africa following champions Dynamos’ withdrawal from the Caf Champions League, the hope is that the platinum miners will at least progress to the first round proper.
