The Ipi Tombe Stakes are in honour of arguably the greatest horse to ever come out of Zimbabwe, if not Africa, which campaigned successfully in South Africa, Dubai and the United States of America.
Traditionally, the Ipi Tompe Stakes is the first major horse racing event of the year, but it has been rescheduled to a date still to be announced by the Mashonaland Turf Club, as they were still negotiating with a potential sponsor.
Instead, the Breeders Champions Cup will take centre stage Sunday and 16 horses have been nominated for the 2,000 metre race, including Captain’s Tiger.
The eight-year-old son of Century Stud and Beautiful Life has an impressive record at Borrowdale race course and should start as the favourite in a race that has a number of old horses, including another eight year old, Orbit War, and the six-year-old Madigan and Menacing.
Captain’s Tiger, once under the Kirk Swanson yard now falls under the Alyson Wright stable. There are also sprinters like Gentle Brook and Supa Dupa, but whether they will last the distance is something else.
The top horse at Borrowdale in the year 2013 – A King Is Born is also in the race, as so are Copper Bay, Rock the Country, and Two Gun Kid, Butler Yearts. Heron Boy and Demitasse are the other Zimbabwean horses in the race.
There is a total of seven races on the cards, which drew a total of 149 entries until the final acceptances. The Zimbabwe Guineas, the first leg of the Triple Crown, will follow the Breeders Champions Cup on February 23. The Zimbabwe Guineas is a Grade 3 race.
