PSL Round-up

Will 2015 be the year of the gold miners? This could the most-asked question in the local football fraternity ahead of the forthcoming Castle Lager football season. Bulawayo outfit How Mine went on a massive shopping spree during the close of the season and that has made them one of the strongest sides on paper.

The club, sponsored by Metallon Gold Company, has been the most active on the market so far. Already, 2014 PSL golden boot joint winners Kuda Musharu and Charles Sibanda, who joined from cross-town rivals Highlanders, have been confirmed as part of the squad and are expected to lead the team’s attack.

An industrious midfield duo of 2013 Soccer Star Tawanda Muparati and skilful Devon Chafa joined from champions Dynamos, while former Caps United skipper, Tapiwa Kumbuyani, also jumped onto their ship.

Former Bosso goal-minder, Munyaradzi Diya, is another player recently added to the squad, as so is ageless striker Limited Chikafa, who joined from ZPC Kariba. Speedy former national team winger Benjamin Marere also joined from FC Platinum.

This week it emerged that the How Mine coach Luke “Vahombe” Masomere was targeting Masvingo United’s talismanic forward, Leftara Ndale.

United’s secretary Moses Ncube and the region’s ZIFA manager, Thadious Machawira, are yet to confirm the deal, but it was widely understood that How Miners would flex their financial muscle and grab the 22-year old striker.

“We are building a team that can just improve our game from last year. We are not looking at the championship as yet because there are already favourites like Dynamos and FC Platinum. It’s just an exercise to put together a competitive squad for the PSL,” said Masomere.

Usually clubs that are brimming with new stars take some time to have them gel-in together, especially in their first season. It would therefore be Masomere’s biggest challenge to make sure his team hits the ground running this coming season.
