Bonne Back in Favour at Colchester

Zimbabwe Under-23 forward Macauley Bonne is back in favour at Colchester United in the English League One, featuring in each of the team’s last six matches and scoring once.

Bonne was included in coach Calisto Pasuwa’s U-23 squad which is scheduled to play Cameroon in an All-Africa Games qualifier next weekend. He made his debut for the country of his parents’ birth in a friendly international against Morocco last November, scoring for Zimbabwe in the 2-1 defeat.

But the 19-year-old had a difficult spell in the first half of the season at Colchester, often struggling just to make the bench as the club’s coaches appeared to always opt for other options.

Things have improved somewhat in the new-year for Borne, who has slowly worked his way back into favour at the struggling outfit.

Colchester are firmly rooted in the relegation zone, enduring a lean spell with just one victory in their last five matches.

Bonne’s fortunes are however improving and on Saturday he came on as an 89th minute substitute as his side went down 2-1 to Rochdale, their third defeat in a row. He had started the team’s previous three matches, scoring his first and only goal of the season in the 3-2 win over Bristol City last month. It was one of only two victories in the last nine matches for Colchester, who are just a point ahead of basement club Yeovil Town.

Bonne is expected to play a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s quest to qualify for both the 2016 Olympics and the All-Africa Games qualifiers.
