Chaminuka welcomes delay

ZPC Kariba coach Soul Chaminuka recently welcomed the decision by the Premier Soccer League secretariat to postpone the start of the new season, which he believed would give his side more time to strengthen and prepare.

PSL secretary general Kenny Ndebele announced early this week that the start of the new campaign would be deferred indefinitely to allow the PSL to complete work on the broadcasting schedule with Supersport.

ZPC Kariba still have some work to do after they lost several key players during the off-season, with right-back Obey Mwerahari, centre-back Dennis Dauda, striker Limited Chikafa and young goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga having departed for greener pastures.

Chaminuka said he would use the breathing space afforded by the postponement of the league start to complete his recruitment.

“We still want to fill certain areas that we think are key to what we want to achieve. We are still negotiating with some clubs to acquire those players and we hope everything will be in place by the end of next week,” said the coach.

“The postponement of the league programme has been a blessing in disguise for us. It will give us time to ensure that the new players gel with the rest of our squad and once I bring in those new players, I should have a complete team and in a better position to say more about our ambitions,” he told The Zimbabwean.

ZPC Kariba stunned the local football fraternity with an improbable title challenge last year, when they only missed out to Harare giants Dynamos on the very final day of the season. Among the players that have so far joined them are Russell Madamombe, George Magariro, and Thomas Magorimbo.
