Farmers refuse to budge

Farmers have hit back at government’s plans to repossess all unproductive land, arguing that all multiple farm owners should surrender some of their land first. They have also demanded that under-performing ministers should be booted out of government.

Farmers in Masvingo said they would not move off their farms even if they were not utilising them, arguing that non-performing ministers should lead by example and resign.

“We will cling on to our pieces of land unless all multiple farm owners surrender some of their properties,” said Simon Gwenga a farmer in Chiredzi. “And under-performing ministers should be booted out of government.” An official with the Zimbabwe Farmers Union, who refused to be named for fear of victimisation, said they had been holding meetings with farmers advising them to increase production. “While we have been encouraging our farmers to increase production it has become clear that they will resist any attempt to evict them from their land. They argue that targets should be introduced at every level, including Cabinet minister,” he said.
