A statement from the German embassy said Schmidt, a diplomat, would visit from March 23 to March 24, during which he would meet government officials as well as members of parliament, the judiciary and civil society.

His visit coincides with the conference “Assessing Progress on the Implementation of Zimbabwe’s New Constitution: National, Regional and Global Perspectives” which is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.

The conference is being organised by the Max-Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law (MPFDPR) from Germany, in collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa and the Southern African Political Economy Series (SAPES) Trust.
